The shape of the chin is an important determinant of facial profile, length and balance.
Chin augmentation is a good surgical option if you have a receding chin, a chin that looks too small in comparison with other facial features or you have a desire for an increased chin prominence.
The intended result is an improved profile. A more attractive jawline that creates better balance between the chin and other facial features.
Depending upon a patient’s existing anatomy and their desired outcome, Dr Cerqueiro selects from a wide variety of implants the proper implant that will fit well and produce a natural look.
Facial implants have proven to provide a safe, predictable, low-cost, low-risk cosmetic surgical procedure. To date, millions of facial implants made from non-toxic materials such as silicone and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) have been implanted, with no reported cases of allergic reaction. The implants, designed specifically for use in the midfacial cheek area and the chin come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. These implants can be custom-trimmed during the procedure for a more natural fit.
Dr. Cerqueiro uses computer imaging simulations during consultations that allows the patient to visualize the facial balance in profile. This method provides a pretty accurate projection of the results that can be expected.
The chin augmentation procedure is done under local anaesthesia and sedation, under general anaesthesia in associate hopitals like La Coruña y Madrid.
An incision is made inside the lower lip or under the chin, and an implant is placed. In an alternative method called sliding osteotomy, a portion of the chin bone is permanently moved forward.
Chin reduction can correct the appearance of an overly prominent chin by decreasing its projection. This procedure is performed by Dr. Cerqueiro in hospital and lasts under 1 hour. It can be performed under general anaesthetic or IV sedation with local anaesthetic. Simultaneously, it can create better harmony between the nose and other facial features for a more balanced and attractive profile.
Other options or additional processes that sometimes greatly enhance the result of the operation (when is possible) are:
- Liposuction of the neck
- Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty)
- Neck Lift (cervical lift)
- Skin rejuvenation (peel).
As in all of our procedures, the anesthetist is a fully qualified specialist physician. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation combined with local or regional anaeshtesia may be preferable in some cases.
Dr. Cerqueiro will review with you the specific risks and the suitability of this procedure at the time of consultation.
All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally.
Major complications are extremely unusual.
