Plastic comes from the Greek term plastikos, meaning to mould or shape.

What is the official qualification that a plastic surgeon must have?

The official title of Specialist in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. (Título de Médico Especialista en Cirugía Plástica, Estética y Reconstructiva). The name of the specialty has changed in 2003, the previous name, also valid, was: Médico Especialista en Cirugía Plástica y Reparadora. In Spain, Specialist Plastic surgeons are certified by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte -MECD). To obtain the official title of specialist by the MECD a physician must pass a series of rigorous tests about medical procedures and practices and must have undergone officially recognised plastic surgery training.

What is reconstructive plastic surgery?

Reconstructive surgery attempts to recreate the form and function of a normal body part after an injury or illness.
